ACM Winter Cleaning 2013

Come help your Student Organization! We are moving everything out of the office to let get our floor waxed! It's been a good 2.5 years since the last floor cleaning and let me tell you, it REALLY needs a cleaning! We will probably start moving things in the late morning into the late afternoon. Please let your voice be heard and let us know you are coming by emailing our thread on the ACM listserv.
In addition to the ACM/LUG office being cleaned, the IT Lab next door will also be getting a good cleaning in terms of reorganization as well.

The dates are as follows:
Move out day: January 3rd, 2014 from 10AM to 5pm
Move in day: January 11th, 2014 from 12PM to 7PM

If you have any questions, please email the ACM Officers or join in on the discussion on the listserv.

Finals Week Update

Hey everyone, hope your finals week started off well. I heard CS 450 was today, hopefully you all survived.

Just wanted to give an update for ACM really fast. It being finals week means it is very stressful for everyone. I was asked to write an email reminding everyone to try and tone it down in terms of loudness and playing games in ACM, I should have sent this sooner but to be honest it slipped my mind. I know many of you use our workstations to play League as well as to do work because you do not have your own laptop to do so, and normally it isn't an issue but the officers would like to keep those computers open for people who need to study. I also ask that if you guys feel the need to play, take it out of ACM and try to be quiet. So for this week let's just go ahead and throw a no gaming policy in ACM (specifically, workstations need to be open unless they are being used productively) and let's keep the noise to a minimum. I know it kind of sucks but we can all hold out for a few days and spend that time making sure we do well on our finals.
Secondly, with winter break around the corner, if you have stuff or food in the ACM please make sure you take care of it by THURSDAY. We want to try and get the office floor cleaned up over break and clean in general, which means any stuff that isn't ACM's is going in the garbage. You have been warned :)
Thanks for taking the time to read this and good luck this week everyone!
As usual, questions/comments/concerns, feel free to talk to me.

An important message from your President

I found out tonight that Sean had to clean up the area alone and that it took him a few hours to do so...

I'm in the office right now and looking around he did a very good job cleaning up, and it takes about 15 minutes to do with a handful of people splitting the work up. That being said, let me point out some things that I see. A few people left a lot of their belongings here, bags, laptops, hat, food/candy, etc. ACM trash cans are spilling over and no one bothered to put them out into the hallway so the janitorial staff can take care of it. They say they don't have keys to our office, I don't want to bother arguing over whether that is true or not so if you see the cans full, please place them into the hallway.

One thing that is definitely NOT okay is how this projector screen is sitting in the middle of the tunnel. I know the small group that set it up wanted to test stuff out and use it for LAN party stuff but leaving it here for Nick to find in the morning is unacceptable. ACM has a spoken understanding with him that we can have access to the areas we need when they are supposed to be closed as long as things are put back how they are supposed to be when the weekend is over. That means trash is picked up, everything is placed back as it should be, and no projector screens blocking the pathway, I don't care if the screen is up for people to walk under, it is still in the way. So whenever a few people get here in the morning (including someone with IT Lab access), please take it down and put it back, thanks.

I don't know how bad the mess was for Sean to clean up tonight, or when people left that SHOULD HAVE HELPED CLEAN, but we need to have a time sometime during LAN parties where people all stop and just clean up, at least a little bit. You all know I try to be laid back when it comes to these things, I even forget about a soda can here and there, but I do try my best to keep the area clean and really hate preaching about how that should never become an issue. I'm not making threats, but when there is an issue at ACM, the President, along with the other officers, is the one who has to answer for it. I don't want to be the one who has to deliver the news about how we can't host LAN parties anymore because a little bit of negligence upset the wrong departmental people and thus we are being punished for it. So do me a favor, do yourselves a favor, and do the ACM a favor and let's not let this happen again.

That all being said, I hope everyone had a good time. I enjoyed myself for the while that I was there, and a special thanks to Tom Sakkos for ordering pizza for everyone who came (I also heard he gave a prize to Alex for beating everyone on The Ship).

As usual, any issues/concerns, feel free to talk to me, my metaphorical door is always open for you guys.
Tom Phillips

1. Microsoft Windows 8 Application Building Workshop [1:30PM - 5:30PM]

We'll be learning to craft awesome Windows 8 apps in Visual Studio using C#/XAML.  Our goal will be to get an app into this Windows store.  Start with an empty project and leave with a full mind and Windows 8 application well underway.  Join Microsoft's Martin Schray and get your application mojo on track.  We'll work to incorporate ads into your apps so you make some money too.
Bring your own Windows 8 machine with Visual Studio 2012.  If you don't have Windows 8 and Visual Studio 2012 you can get them from your departments DreamSpark Premium at the link below.
